ORA 1034 Oracle not available
ORA-27121 unable to determine size of shared memory segment

Symptoms

Customer is getting the following errors when a user other than oracle
tries to log into the database:

$ sqlplus test
SQL*Plus: Release 10.1.0.2.0 - Production on Fri Apr 9 11:00:52 2004
Copyright (c) 1982, 2004, Oracle. All rights reserved.
Enter password:
ERROR:
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27121: unable to determine size of shared memory segment
Linux Error: 13: Permission denied

Changes

This is a new RAC 10g installation in a 2-node RAC environment

Cause

The problem is that the permissions for the $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle executable is not 6751 in the second node:

[opcbrh1]/u01/app/oracle/product/10.1.0/bin> ls -l oracle

Fix

Change the permissions to 6751 in the second node using chmod:

$chmod 6751 $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle
